The original Septentrian colours were gules and or (red and gold/yellow). The yellow bear eventually was replaced by the white (silver/argent) bear we have today.

In period it was an heraldic habit to colour the genitalia of beasts on a red field blue. For a time this custom was followed in Septentria. The Septentrian bear's blue genitalia were (and are) referred to as 'blue yarbles'.
